Wentworth Club Overview

Overview

Wentworth West Course:
The Wentworth West Course had the distinction of hosting the Ryder Cup in 1953 and the Canada Cup in 1956, it then went on to host two of golf's most prestigious championships, the HSBC World Matchplay since 1964 and the BMW PGA Championship since 1984.

Designed by Harry Colt and opening for play in 1926, it was updated by The Club's worldwide touring professional, and Wentworth resident, PGA professional golfer Ernie Els in 2005 and again in 2007.

The West Course is a glorious and natural setting for golf, combining a stretch of heathland with a heavily wooded surrounding landscape of oak, birch and pine trees. Harry Colt used these features to create a challenging course with a variety of different length par 3s, 4s and 5s that turn both ways.

Els' redevelopment of the course was in response to the technological advancements of the game which allowed modern day golfers to drive the ball significantly further off the tee. Els re-lengthened a number of holes and re-bunkered where appropriate, moving the course into the 21st century whilst ensuring the essential character of the golf course was retained along the way.

Wentworth East Course:
Although often overshadowed by the infamous West Course, the Wentworth East Course is a real golfing gem.

Its undulating and springy fairways zigzag in amongst the golf course's beautiful woodland setting.

Careful shot selection is the key to success here, with well-positioned bunkers around the green creating a difficult challenge for all golfers.

The Edinburgh Course:
The Edinburgh golf course at Wentworth is the newest of the three courses, opening for play in 1990.

Designed by coach and former Ryder Cup player and captain John Jacobs in consultation with nine-time major champion Gary Player and the Club’s then professional Bernard Gallacher, the course is characterised by strategically located pines, a good variety of doglegs, clever hazard placement and large greens.
