Join SandwedgedWith a wealth of downlands, heaths, commons and parklands, the county of Surrey naturally has a variety of fantastic sites on which to build golf courses. Although there are in excess of one hundred Surrey golf courses and clubs to choose from, offering great variety for all levels of golfers, there are a select few courses that are truly exceptional and are worthy of special mention.
Not many golf courses can boast a tournament history as impressive as Wentworth's West Golf Course. Having had the distinction of hosting the Ryder Cup in 1953 and the Canada Cup in 1956, it then went on to host two of golf's most prestigious championships, the HSBC World Matchplay since 1964 and the BMW PGA Championship since 1984.
The Wentworth West Course was designed by Harry Colt and opened for play in 1926. It was updated by The Club's worldwide touring professional, and Wentworth resident, PGA professional golfer Ernie Els in 2005 and again in 2007.
Aesthetically, Wentworth is a glorious and natural setting for golf, combining a stretch of heath land with a heavily wooded surrounding landscape of oak, birch and pine. Harry Colt used these features to create a challenging course with a variety of different length par 3s, 4s and 5s that turn both ways.
Els' redevelopment of the course was in response to the technological advancements of the game which allowed modern day golfers to drive the ball significantly further off the tee. Els re-lengthened a number of holes and re-bunkered where appropriate, moving the course into the 21st century whilst ensuring the essential character of the golf course was retained along the way.
Founded by Sir Cosmo Bonsor in 1903, and designed by Herbert Fowler, a leading amateur of the era, The Old Course at Walton Heath is currently ranked 81st out of the top 100 golf courses in the world.
It has hosted over 60 major amateur and professional championships in its illustrious history, including the 1981 Ryder Cup, 5 European Opens and 23 News of the World Matchplay Championships.
Fowler initially created the course as a nine-hole course, extending it to eighteen holes before the First World War. The championship length of the Old Course is over 7,000 yards, and the visitor is more likely to play it at a still lengthy yardage of approximately 6,800.
Tangly heather often frames the fairways so the wayward golfer can really pay the penalty off the tee. There are some really strong holes on the Old Course - one of the best of the outward nine is the 5th, a fantastic and incredibly challenging 391-yard par four.
The Addington was designed in 1912 by Jone Frederick Abercromby who was accredited as being 'one of the finest architects in all of golf'. In many senses, the course is golf's secret garden and many believe it is Abercromby's finest creation.
With fairways framed by a natural forest of English Oak, Silver Birch, Beech and Cedar trees, rickety bridges spanning glorious heathland dells, and the occasional peacock wandering around, the course's idyllic location allows for a real feeling of intimacy.
The course has certainly had it's fair share of plaudits. Former member and acclaimed golf wiiter Henry Longhurst described the 230 yard par 3, 13th hole as 'with the exception of the fifth at Pine Valley, near Philadelphia, the greatest one-shot hole in inland golf'. The 16th is also included in his all time great golf holes.
The 6th hole was famously referenced by author PG Wodehouse who stated "anyone wishing to write to the author should address all correspondence to: PG Wodehouse, c/o the 6th bunker, The Addington Golf Club, Croydon, Surrey".
The Addington will challenge and excite golfers of all abilities. With no one hole the same The Addington ensures golfers will need every shot in the bag to navigate their way round this exceptional golf course.
Designed by renowned architect Robert Trent Jones Jr and opened for play in August 1991, The Wisley Golf Club is a highly successful private Members golf club.
Located in a quiet and peaceful area of Surrey adjoining the Royal Horticultural Society Gardens and bordered by the River Wey, the golf course is built upon a truly breathtaking setting.
The courses comprises three loops of nine holes, The Church, The Mill and The Garden, each of which comprise five par fours, two par fives and two short holes making a par of 72 from any 18 hole combination.
The outstanding presentation of the course compares with the best in the world: from well-manicured tees and fairways to immaculate bent grass greens. Off the course there are state of the art practice facilities and the clubhouse provides the highest standards of service and cuisine.
